The Father and the Son

Here is the text of another pamphlet I wrote recently.

Given that it is Easter, I have decided to post some more quotes from the Gospels over the next week. After that, Ridvan!

The Father and the Son

"Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works." St John 14: 10

Throughout the four Gospels, Jesus said that his words did not come from him but from his Father. For example, in St John 12:49, Jesus says: "I have not spoken of myself but the Father who sent me. He gave me a commandment -what I should say and what I should speak."

At one point, Philip asked Jesus to show the Father to the disciples. Jesus explained his connection to the Father by saying: "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father? Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me." (St John 14:9 and 11)

Not long before Jesus was crucified, he comforted his disciples by telling them that he would return. And, to this day, Christians await the fulfillment of this promise.

Baha'u'llah (lit: Glory of God), the founder of the Baha'i religion, declared that he was the Promised One, as well as the Father who spoke in Jesus. If this is true, Baha'u'llah?s word should sound like Jesus' word, for Jesus spoke only what his Father commanded him to. Read the quotes in this pamphlet and see if you can hear Jesus in Baha'u'llah.

Turn the other cheek
Jesus: "Ye have heard that it hath been said: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you that ye resist not evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." Matthew 5:38-39

Baha'u'llah: "Adorn thyself with my character, in such wise that should anyone treat thee unjustly thou wouldst take no heed of him nor oppose him. Leave him to the judgement of thy Lord, the Powerful, Omnipotent and Self-Subsisting. Be at all times a wronged one, for this is one of my attributes, though none but the sincere are aware of it. Verily, the sighs of patience uttered by one wronged are more precious to God than any other deed, did ye but know." Surah of Blood

No man can serve two masters
Jesus: "No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matthew 6:24

Baha'u'llah: "O son of earth! Wouldst thou have Me, seek none other than Me; and wouldst thou gaze upon My beauty, close thine eyes to the world and all that is therein; for My will and the will of another than Me, even as fire and water, cannot dwell together in one heart." Persian Hidden Words, no 31

Do not find fault in others
Jesus: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?" Matthew 7:3-4

Baha'u'llah: "O son of being! How couldst thou forget thine own faults and busy thyself with the faults of others? Whoso doeth this is accursed of Me." Persian Hidden Words, no 26

Do not deny a person?s request
Jesus: "Give to him that asketh thee and from him that borrow of thee turn thou not away." Matthew 5:42

Baha'u'llah: "O son of man! Deny not My servant should he ask anything from thee, for his face is My face; be then abashed before Me." Arabic Hidden Words, no 30

Golden rule
Jesus: "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12

Baha'u'llah: "O son of being! Ascribe not to any soul that which thou wouldst not have ascribed to thee, and say not that which thou doest not. This is My command unto thee, do thou observe it." Arabic Hidden Words, no 29

Do not throw pearls before swine
Jesus: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and rend you." Matthew 7:6

Baha'u'llah: "O son of dust! The wise are they that speak not unless they obtain a hearing, even as the cup-bearer, who proffereth not his cup till he findeth a seeker, and the lover who crieth not out from the depths of his heart until he gazeth upon the beauty of his beloved." Persian Hidden Words, p 36

Lay up riches in heaven
Jesus: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal." Matthew 6:19-20

Baha'u'llah: "O son of my handmaid! Be not troubled in poverty nor confident in riches, for poverty is followed by riches, and riches are followed by poverty. Yet to be poor in all save God is a wondrous gift, belittle not the value thereof, for in the end it will make thee rich in God, and thus thou shalt know the meaning of the utterance, 'In truth ye are the poor,' and the holy words, 'God is the all-possessing.'"
